Persons with DisabilitiesDecember 3rd is International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

It is a time to celebrate differences, challenge stereotypes, and create a more inclusive world. For young people, feeling heard and understood can make all the difference.

This week, I worked with our Expert by Experience (EBE) using the Level Up Communication Priorities. Together we discussed how we can use our priorities to help everyone communicate better and support disabilities:

  • Use the Right Words: Say things like, “How can I support you?” and avoid dismissive comments like, “You don’t seem disabled.”

  • Bust Myths: Autism doesn’t mean someone lacks empathy or you can’t communicate effectively, and ADHD isn’t just being “distracted.” Everyone’s experience is unique!

  • Listen to Young People: Ask how they prefer to communicate—text, email, or in person—and give them time to respond.

  • Support Families: Carers need understanding too—check in on how they’re doing.

This month, as we also celebrate Christmas, let’s make an extra effort to look out for one another. Whether it’s being a good friend, offering support, or simply spreading kindness, small acts can make a big difference.

Why It MattersEvery small action—like listening, learning, and speaking up—helps break barriers and creates a world where everyone feels valued.

So, what will you do today to celebrate differences and make a positive change?
